Al-Bondoky is an old Italian gold coin used in Egypt . The name Al-Bondoky or Venetian is named after Venice in Italy . Court documents in Egypt referred to these coins by the name dahab Bondoky or Venetian gold or Al-moshakhess Al-bondoky or Venetian personification because of the image of the Duke of Venice on one of the sides . Hence the coins were dubbed Ducati in Europe . Al-Bondoky weighed almost 3.45 grams with fineness 996/1000 i.e almost 24 carat . That's why 24carat gold in Egypt is called Bondoky or Venetian gold . Al-Bondoky had been traded first in the Memluk era in Egypt when Alexandria customs insisted that European traders pay the value of Sultani goods in gold bullion or ducati
